PARK PRIRODE (NATURE PARK LAKE VRANSKO)
Park inviting to go around the lake of Vransko, one of the biggest in Europe. Part of it is a bird sanctuary.
When you stay in Pakoštane, the first thing you'll want to do is walk around the lake! It's huge, 14 km long and 2 km wide, or 3,000 ha - one of the largest in Europe. It's no more than 5 m deep. Its proximity to the coast means that during high tides, seawater enters the freshwater. Seawater and river fish (trout, catfish, tench, carassin, eel as well as sea bass, mug and sole) live side by side.
To the north-west, in an area declared a nature park and bird sanctuary, rushes and reeds grow. Colonies of birds have taken up residence here. This is one of the country's most important ornithological reserves. You can observe 111 species of birds, a multitude of avian species, different species of wild ducks and herons. During migration, some birds stay around the lake. Several trails pass over the water, and observation points have been set up. Take a boat trip around the lake to discover marshy landscapes that are difficult to access by land.
How to get there. By car or motorbike, from Biograd or Pakoštane, head for Vrana. By bus (Vrana).
By bike, 44 km of cycle paths criss-cross the lake's surroundings, some of them intersecting with the national road, making them ideal for cycle touring. Allow a full day's cycling, and bring water, a picnic and sun protection.
