PLACE OF THE NATION (NARODNI TRG)
National square to the north-east of Diocletian's palace with a tower whose mission was to impose calm and submission to the inhabitants.
To the northwest of Diocletian's palace, Place Nationale, with its peristyle, is Split's other focal point. The Venetian presence, linked to a period of economic and urban development, strongly influenced the architecture. The Rector's Palace and the Town Hall were built during this period, buildings that were destroyed and partially rebuilt in the 19th century. The tower, the fortress of the occupying garrison, had the mission of imposing calm and submission on the inhabitants.
