BLUE GROTTE
Don't miss the excursion from Vis to the islet of Biševo (Balun Bay) to see the marvellous Blue Grotto.
It's one of Vis's most attractive natural discoveries. Tour operators offer to take you there from Split, but it takes several hours by boat to get there. So it's best to plan a stay on the island of Vis. To the south-west of Vis, or in Komiža, the island port closest to the cave, you'll find a private boat service that runs round trips to the islet of Biševo.
In the small bay of Balun, the boat arrives at its destination. You have to bend over to enter the cavity, engine off, and discover the Blue Cave(Modra Špilja in Croatian), a marine site 24 m long and 12 m wide, where a zenithal opening floods the aquatic space with an incredible silvery blue. The site is now protected and bathing is prohibited.
Such is the popularity of the site that in summer, you may have to wait for hours - under the sun - to be allowed to enter the grotto. The chromatic spectacle lasts around 15 minutes in summer. It's a total amazement, especially between 11 a.m. and noon, when you're lucky enough to be a little alone in the off-season. Some boatmen offer a tour of Vis and Biševo, followed by swimming stops at the Salbunara and/or Balun creeks.
Weather, an important factor: Even in summer, windy spells and overcast skies can postpone a sea trip by several days. If you don't have much time on the island, it's a good idea to find out about the weather conditions on arrival in Vis, or even at the start of your stay in the island region.
