FRANCISCAN MONASTERY (FRANJEVAČKI SAMOSTAN)
The most beautiful cloister in the city offers a peaceful retreat from the hubbub of the Stradun.
Next to the Church of St. Saviour, the monastery was built from 1337 in Romanesque-Gothic style. The cloister, built between 1327 and 1348 by Mihoje Brajkov, distributes four arcaded galleries. Featuring a beautiful garden with palm trees and a variety of plant species, it also boasts a covered gallery, an ogival arcade and elegant pillars topped with figural capitals. After the earthquake of 1667, the church was remodeled in Baroque style. On the Stradun side, however, the portal remains in the Gothic-Renaissance style. This monastery is the counterpart of the Dominican monastery (behind the Ploče gate).
In the monastic museum, numerous works have been preserved, particularly the view of Ragusa before the earthquake (1667) that destroyed almost the entire city. This graphic image was an important document for architects. Among other things, it enabled them to rebuild the old town as closely as possible to the original plans. All that remains of the pre-earthquake period is the main gateway to the Stradun, with its pediment decorated with a Gothic pietà by brothers Leonardo and Petar Petrović.
The former pharmacy, still active inside the convent, opened its doors in 1317. Historically, it was the third largest in Europe! Its first counter and numerous apothecary utensils are preserved in the monastery museum, while the rich library holds thousands of books and manuscripts.
