Built in 1352 in what was once the Jewish ghetto, it is one of the oldest synagogues in Europe. A Sephardic Jewish community fleeing the Portuguese and Spanish Reconquest settled in Dubrovnik in the 15th century, where a 1546 decree authorized their presence. Its members became eminent doctors, merchants and government officials... The synagogue and its small museum house a number of remarkable items, including a 13th-century Torah and a Menorah. Today, the Jewish community of Ragusa numbers 55 members.
