It is through this imposing medieval gate that the entrance to the old town of Dubrovnik is made. Welcome to Dubrovnik!

The Porte Pile, imposing and superb, is located in the northwest of the city. Accessible from a stone bridge between two Gothic arches, embellished with a park with numerous orange and lemon trees, it is overhung by a statue of the patron saint of the city, St. Blaise (Sv. Vlaho), made in 1922 by Ivan Meštrović (the most famous Croatian architect!). Its outer facade is in Renaissance style and dates from 1537, while the inner facade is in Gothic style (1460). Between the two gates, two commemorative plaques recall the damage suffered in 1991 and 1992 during the siege of Dubrovnik.

This gate recalls the time when the city was closed at night: the drawbridge was raised and the gates were chained shut. Today, the gate is open 24 hours a day, but in summer, due to the massive influx of tourists, it is equipped with signs and ropes for pedestrian traffic. Once through the two gates, you will arrive directly on the Stradun, the main street of the old town. Through this same gate, Napoleon passed in 1806, when he decreed the end of the Republic of Ragusa.

Any visit to Dubrovnik starts here and even the Ragusans have the habit of meeting at Pile. In front of this gate most of the city buses stop and in winter a small Christmas market is organized in the small square just before the tourist office. In short, Pile is a must in Dubrovnik.
