CLOCK TOWER
Tower dating from 1444 and rebuilt in 1928, a symbol of Dubrovnik. The hours are indicated by the Zelenci, two bronze soldiers.
Adjacent to the Sponza Palace and triumphantly marking the arrival of the Stradun, the clock tower is one of the symbols of the city. It was built in 1444 and is 35 metres high, but at the beginning of the 20th century it was too lean and was destroyed for safety reasons. The present tower was rebuilt in 1928. The hours are indicated by two bronze soldiers, Maro and Baro, called the Zelenci (the Greens) because of their colour. The original statues and mechanisms are in the Sponza Palace, but the huge bell used dates from 1506.
