ROLAND'S COLUMN (ORLANDOV STUP)
Column on top of which is the paladin Roland as an armed knight, symbol of the free republic of Dubrovnik.
In the centre of Luža Square, between the Sponza Palace and the Church of St. Blaise, an astonishing column was erected in 1418 by Antun Dubrovčanin, at the top of which the paladin Roland, an armed knight, was enthroned. It has always symbolized the free republic of Dubrovnik, so much so that in 1991 it served as a rallying point for the defenders of the old city during its siege. The forearm of Roland's statue was used by merchants to measure units of measure.
