Built between the and centuries, Dubrovnik's ramparts are impressive. A visit is simply a must.

From the top of the ramparts, you will have a breathtaking view of the entire historic city, the hills, the coast and the sea. Count on 2 to 3 hours to do the whole tour. It is best to do it early in the morning to avoid the crowds and the heat of the afternoon. To rest, there is the Caffe on the Wall, the refreshment bar installed on the roof terrace of the Sveti Petar tower.

Built between the 8th and 16th centuries, the city walls have protected the city for hundreds of years, even though the city has always favored diplomatic solutions over armed conflict with its rivals. These ramparts are among the most accomplished in Europe, they encircle the entire old city with their 1,940 m long. The walls, perfectly preserved, can reach 25 m high and up to 6 m thick.

The inner part, smaller enclosure with its ten semi-circular bastions, was built by the Florentine architect Michelozzo Michelozzi. The outer belt has 3 circular towers, 5 bastions and 12 square or rectangular towers, as well as a huge fortress Sveti Ivan (St. John) overlooking the port.

Two other famous fortresses defend the city. One in Revelin is topped by a large terrace. The other, in Lovrijenac is perched 37 m high on its rocky peak, near the Pile gate. The latter watched over the sea but also the road to the west, closing the protection belt of the fortified city.
