The island of Lokrum, classified as a nature reserve in 1964, is endowed with a rich flora including pines, cacti and a fauna including peacocks.
The vegetation of the island is rich in pines, cypresses, oaks, myrtle, oleanders... Lokrum comes from the Latin acrumen which means "bitter fruit". The foundation of the botanical garden (1959) has allowed the acclimatization of tropical species, many cacti and eucalyptus. Under the patronage of UNESCO, the island was classified as a nature reserve in 1964. Peacocks roam freely. In the seabed it is not uncommon to find starfish.
