Lazaretto located in the district of Ploče, a fortified structure on the island of Lokrum in ruins but still visitable.
Between 1534 and 1557, the Republic of Dubrovnik built a lazaretto on the northernmost part of the island of Lokrum. However, the project was never completed. It was in fact abandoned in favour of a larger lazaretto in the Ploče district of Dubrovnik (recently renovated). The republic feared that the fortified structure on the island of Lokrum could become an attack base for the city's enemies. Today, the lazaretto is in ruins (some of the stones were used over time for the ramparts) but visitable.
