PAVLIN MONASTERY (PAVLINSKI SAMOSTAN)
Monastery transformed into a prison in Lepoglava with a church decorated with beautiful trompe-l'oeil.
Heavily damaged in 1481 during the Ottoman invasions, the monastery was rebuilt and the church redecorated with superb trompe-l'oeil by Ivan Ranger. This 18th-century painter influenced local artists known as Paulists (the school of Paulin Aleksej Koniger). This artistic and cultural hotbed was also a meeting place for scientists, linguists, etc. Later, it was transformed into a prison, and the Cardinal of Croatia, who had refused to separate Church and State, was incarcerated here under Tito.
