A symbol of the region's wealth, the cathedral was built between 1866 and 1882, under the patronage of Strossmayer. 7 million bricks were needed! The bishop wanted a large, comfortable church in the neo-Gothic tradition, with a monumental organ. The frescoes were painted by brilliant art students on state scholarships. You can also go down into the crypt, where Strossmayer is laid to rest. A wonderful visit.
