Recently refurbished, the National Theater programs classical plays and more contemporary shows all year round. It was founded in 1891 according to the plans of the Bavarian architect E. Ziller, one of the main representatives of the neoclassical school in Greece. The theater opened its doors to the public in 1901 while the first performance of Greek tragedy occurred in 1903: theOresteia by Aeschylus. The Drama School of the TN, the most renowned in the country, was founded in 1901 while since 2018 students can train as directors.
