Christmas, with its aromas of cinnamon and honey, is a time for families to gather around a feast and friends to celebrate.
Less important than Easter, Christmas is nevertheless celebrated in Greece. Signs of westernization in this eastern land, Christmas trees, decorations and gifts have made their appearance in Greek homes. However, traditionally, it is rather St. Basil who plays the role of Santa Claus on the evening of December 31. Christmas is the occasion to share delicacies such as melomakarona cakes, egg-shaped and flavored with honey and olive oil, and kourabiedes, almond shortbread sprinkled with powdered sugar.
