The oldest cemetery in Athens where many Greek celebrities are buried.

Established in 1837 by King Otto, this is the oldest cemetery in Athens. Many Greek celebrities are buried here, including actress Melina Mercouri and, more recently, singer Demis Roussos, as well as historical figures such as Theodoros Kolokotronis, the hero of the War of Independence, and Heinrich Schliemann, the archaeologist who discovered Mycenae. L'endroit est insolite. Je ne voyait pas un cimetière comme celui-ci dans la Grèce antique. C'est une visite qui me parait incontournable à Athènes, et je ne regrette pas du tout de l'avoir fait

Comme il est agréable de visiter un tel cimetière ! En effet, ses églises/chapelles à coupole, ses tombes de marbre, sa végétation (palmiers, pins, etc.) resplendissent à la lumière du Soleil.

Nous étions venus pour nous recueillir sur la tombe de Demis Roussos, que nous avons trouvée grâce à un pope (sinon, nous ne l'aurions jamais trouvé, vu la taille du cimetière). D'ailleurs, la tombe est impressionnante par sa modestie... celle qui caractérisait Demis, sans aucun doute.
