Statue of quadriga in commemoration of the victory of king Eumenes II of Pergamon at the Panathenean Games.

The large marble pedestal from Mount Hymette that you see on your left, west of the Propylaea and up the great staircase, served as the base for a statue of a quadriga erected in 178 BC by King Eumenes II of Pergamon to commemorate his victory in the Panathene Games. In 27 BC, this statue was replaced by a monument dedicated to Marcus Agrippa, the city's benefactor who, among other things, financed the construction of the Odeon on the site of the Roman agora.
