BALL DOOR
One of two gates in the AD fortified enclosure on the west side of the hill.
The Beule Gate marks the entrance to the Acropolis today. It was named after the French archaeologist who excavated the site in 1852. It is one of the two gates of the fortified enclosure dating from the 3rd century AD, located to the west of the hill. It is highly probable that these fortifications were built after the Herulian invasion in 267 AD to protect the Acropolis from possible enemies. From that time until the 19th century, the Acropolis was again transformed into a fortress.
