HEPHAISTOS TEMPLE
Ancient temple featuring a single series of 36 columns with a frieze.
Dedicated to Hephaestus and Athena Ergani as patrons of the arts and crafts, the so-called Hephaestus temple was built between 450 and 440 BC. The work of an unknown architect, the temple is also known as "Théséio", a name attributed during the medieval period. It is a peripteral Doric edifice with a single series of 36 columns. The frieze was decorated with sculptures depicting battles between the Centaurs. The multicolored fragments of the inner part of the temple are on display at the British Museum in London.
