The 19th-century neoclassical building of the Polytechnic marks contemporary Greek history as a symbol of the struggle against the dictatorship of the colonels. Work on the two-storey central building overlooking Patission Street, and the two symmetrical side buildings, began in 1862 to plans by architect L. Kaftantzoglou. The project was made possible by two Greek benefactors, N. Stournaris and G. Averoff.
