The imposing Zappéion is one of Athens' last remaining neoclassical public buildings. The work of Danish architect Hansen, it was designed to fulfill benefactor Zappas' vision of reviving the Olympic spirit in modern Greece. Thus, for the first Games in 1896, it hosted the fencing competition. Over time, the Megaron took on a variety of functions, including that of public radio between 1938 and 1973. In 1979, Greece's accession to the EEC took place in the central hall. Today, it hosts large-scale events.
