Three centuries of modern art are retraced through the masterpieces on display: El Greco, Delacroix, Rodin, Tetsis, Tsarouchis..
The National Gallery Museum - Alexandros Soutsos Museum is an iconic museum housing important collections of modern and contemporary Greek and European art spanning five centuries. Completely renovated and equipped with new spaces in 2021, the new complex promotes the history of Greek art and its dissemination to the general public. With an aesthetic and functional interplay between built volumes, the old building and open spaces, it rightly occupies a prominent place in the Greek capital. It highlights the country's artistic and cultural identity.
The welcome and tone of the visit are signalled by the signature of contemporary Greek painter P. Tetsis and his work "Marché à ciel ouvert" (1982): an almost 15 m painting, bursting with color and brimming with life, lets visitors know that the Gallery is open to all who wish to enjoy pictorial art.
On the second floor of the exhibition, the permanent collection invites visitors to discover the origins of modern Greek art, from the post-Byzantine period to the end of the 19th century.
On the second floor, the works on display take visitors on a journey through the evolution of Greek painting, with a particular focus on the first half of the 20th century. In the galleries on the third floor, we witness the evolution and concomitant emergence of various contemporary artistic movements.
