FOUNDATIONS OF THE ANCIENT TEMPLE
Foundation with a Doric temple holding the treasure of the Attic-Delian alliance.
Between the Erechtheion and the Parthenon, the foundations of the archaic temple of Athena, built in 570-560 BC, remain. According to archaeologists, it was a Doric temple built in place of a temple from the Geometric period, itself built on the site of the Mycenaean palace. Built under Pisistratus, this temple was destroyed by the Persians in 480 BC. Under Pericles, it housed in its secos the treasure of the Attic-Delian alliance, brought by Athens.
