Mid-November, between the small town of Marathon and the center of Athens, on the route of the first marathon organized in 1896.
This endurance race (Κλασικός Μαραθώνιος Αθηνών/Klasikos Marathonios Athinon) follows the route of the first marathon organized for the first modern Olympic Games, in 1896. It starts from Marathon's small concrete stadium for a grand finish at Athens' Panathenaic Stadium. The course was inspired by the legend of Phidippides, who died of exhaustion after running to Athens to announce the Greek victory at the Battle of Marathon in 490 B.C. But the 42.195 km distance was set in London in 1908.
