LAKE (LIMNI) MARATHONAS
Artificial lake measuring 2.45 . Beautiful curved pentelic marble dam, 54 m high and 285 m long.
This 2.45 km2 artificial lake (Λίμνη Μαραθώνος/Limni Marathonos) was created in 1929 with the construction of an elegant 54 m-high, 285 m-long curved pentelic marble dam at the junction of the Varnavas river and the Charadros river, which then flows through the town of Marathon into the bay. Until 1959, the lake was the main source of drinking water for the greater Athens area. The olive-tree-lined banks are pleasant to walk along. From the dam, a single-lane road leads to Kifissia (15 km to the south-west).
