AESCHYLUS FESTIVAL
Festival of theater, music, dance and cinema at Eleusis (22 km west of Athens), ten days in early September.
This theater, music, dance and film festival (Φεστιβάλ Αισχύλεια/Festival Aischylia) is held in Eleusis, the birthplace of the great Greek tragedian Aeschylus (525-456 BC). It takes place during the period when, in ancient times, the "Eleusis mysteries" were held on site at the sanctuary of Demeter. Nowadays, there are no strange initiation rites, but festive events take place all over the city (European Capital of Culture in 2023), in particular at the ancient Oil Mill of Eleusis.
