FORTRESS OF ACRONAUPLIE
Byzantine, Frankish, Venetian and Ottoman remains on the hill just above the old town. Views over the Argolic Gulf.
This fortress (Φρούριο της Ακροναυπλίας/Frourio tis Akronafplias) offers beautiful views over the Argolic Gulf. It overlooks the old town and the Arvanitia promenade on a hill 40 m above sea level. It stretches 900 m in length, with Byzantine, Frankish, Venetian and Ottoman remains. Access is from the east, along the Grimaldi bastion (1706). Amid the ruins stand two modern structures: a hotel from the Xenia program, built in 1958 and abandoned since 1993, and the luxury Nafplia Palace complex, open since 1979.
