BOURDZI FORTRESS
Iconic islet in the Nafplio harbor, fortified by the Venetians from 1471. Access by boat every 30 minutes in summer.
In the harbor of Nafplio, this iconic 4,000m2 islet (Μπούρτζι) was fortified by the Venetians from 1471 and bears a name derived from the Turkish burç, which in this case means "tower". It is reached by boat from the old port (every 30 minutes in summer). You can visit the ramparts, bastions and octagonal tower added during the second Venetian period, in 1697. Bourdzi was twice home to the Greek government (in 1824 and 1827), then the residence of the executioner of Nafplio (1865-1913) and a luxury hotel (1935-1970).
