CHÂTEAU LARISSA D'ARGOS
Atop the Larissa hill overlooking Argos, this Byzantine castle offers views as far as Nafplio and the Gulf.
Atop the hill of Larissa, 287 m above sea level, this 10th-century Byzantine castle (Κάστρο Λάρισα Άργους/Kastro Larisa Argous) dominates Argos and offers views as far as Nafplio and the Argolic Gulf. Built on a Mycenaean fort, then remodeled by the Venetians and Ottomans, it is well preserved: triple enclosure and powerful towers in the central part. Along the way, the road passes two monasteries: Panagia Katakekrymeni (rebuilt in the 20th century), overlooking Argos, and Agia Marina (18th century), at the foot of the castle.
