PANAGIA ELONA MONASTERY
Monastery nestled in a cliff on Mount Parnon, 500 meters above sea level. Founded around 1300, it houses an icon attributed to Saint Luke.
This monastery (Ιερά Μονή Παναγίας Ελώνης/Iera Moni Panagias Elonis) is set into a cliff of Mount Parnon, 500 m above sea level and above a gorge of the Dafnon River. Made up of white buildings erected between the 18th and 20th centuries, it was founded around 1300, on the spot where an icon of the Virgin Mary attributed to Saint Luke was "miraculously" discovered. A small community of nuns has watched over the icon since it was stolen and recovered in 2006.
