AGIOS NIKOLAOS SINTZA MONASTERY
One of Greece's most impressive monasteries, set into a cliff, reminiscent of the Panagia Chozoviotissa in Amorgos.
Founded in the 13th century, this monastery (Ιερά Μονή Αγίου Νικολάου Σιντζας/Iera Moni Agiou Nikolaou Sintzas) is impressive: it's nestled in a cave in the cliffs of Mount Parnon, 500 m above sea level. It owes its name to the Tsakonian word sytza ("fig tree"). Rebuilt in the 18th century, it houses a fine carved wooden iconostasis and the tomb of a 13th-century Frankish monk bearing the inscription "One always returns to one's first love".
