CÉADAS CHASM
Abyss where the Spartans threw those condemned to death in ancient times. Staircase. Beautiful waterfalls nearby.
This chasm (Σπηλαιοβάραθρο Καιάδα/Spilaiovarathro Kaiada) is a narrow, 30 m-high fault in the Taygetos cliffs, where Spartans precipitated condemned prisoners to death during ancient times. Access is via a large staircase, but for safety reasons, the entrance is partially blocked off. The site probably corresponds to the Apothetes' Abyss, where, according to a dark legend, the Spartans threw their disabled children. In fact, only the (numerous) bones of adults have been found here. Beautiful waterfalls nearby.
