EPIDAURE-LIMIRA PENINSULA
Peloponnese peninsula. Here you'll find Monemvasia, the island of Elafonisos, the village of Neapoli, the Kastania cave and Cape Malea.
This peninsula (Χερσόνησος Επίδαυρου Λιμηράς/Chersonisos Epidavrou Limiras) forms the southeastern "foot" of the Peloponnese. Here you'll find Monemvassia, beautiful beaches and the island of Elafonisos (19 km2, 800 inhabitants), itself just 4.6 nautical miles (8.6 km) from Kythera (see Petit Futé Greek Islands guide). The peninsula owes its name to the ancient city of Epidaurus Limera, whose site (9 km north of Monemvassia) today offers very little to see. To the south-west, you can take a boat from the village of Pounta to Elafonisos (8-minute crossing) and from the village of Neapoli to Kythera (1h45) and Antikythera (4h). To the south-east, two natural sites are well worth a visit. 52 km from Monemvassia(via Neapoli), the Kastania cave is 500 m long and features superb multicolored stalactites. A little further south lies the Vavila-Kounos wildlife refuge (18.5 km2), home to wild boar, jackals and birds of prey. On the south coast, by the beach of Agia Marina, the petrified forest of Agios Nikolaos is made up of tree trunks fossilized over 2 million years ago. And, at the peninsula's south-eastern tip, Cape Malea is impressive with its crashing waves. Topped by a lighthouse (1860) and German installations from the Second World War, it is the third southernmost point of continental Europe, after Punta (Spain) and Cape Ténare (Magne peninsula).
