VALTAKI BEACH
Large sandy beach famous for the shipwreck that washed up here in 1981. Laying site for loggerhead sea turtles. Swimming.
This 1.2-km-long beach (Παραλία Βαλτάκι/Paralia Valtaki) is famous for the wreck that has lain stranded on the sand since 1981. This is the smuggling vessel Dimitrios, which stopped at Gythio in 1980 and was seized by customs. However, following a fire on board, the 67 m-long cargo ship drifted unmanned until now, and has remained abandoned and rusting ever since. The beach is pleasant for swimming, with a café-tavern at each end, but without shade. It's also a nesting ground for loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta).
