ASPALATHOS
With its panoramic terrace overlooking the Gulf of Messinia, this café-bar-restaurant (Ασπαλαθος) is great at sunset for a cocktail or dinner (salads and a few dishes). This is also where you can find out about accommodation in Vathia: three tower-houses are fitted out with rooms, but the owners aren't always around. For the record, aspalathos is the Greek name for the hairy calicotome (Calicotome villosa), a shrub in the Maniote scrubland that was said to repel Hades, the god of the Underworld. Closed out of season.
