GORGES DU VYROS
Beautifully landscaped gorges beneath Mount Profitas Ilias (2,405 m altitude), where the small river Vyros rises. Hiking.
These gorges (Φαράγγι του Βυρού/Faraggi tou Vyrou) offer magnificent scenery beneath Mount Profitas Ilias, the peak of the Taygetos range (2,405 m above sea level), where the small river Vyros rises. In summer, the riverbed is dry. From the Mourtzinos tower, follow the river for 4.5 km, past the Lylaki monastery (18th-century frescoes) to the Sotiros monastery (founded in the 14th century, rebuilt in 1807). Return along a 4.5 km path through the hamlet of Agia Sofia, with beautiful views over the Gulf of Messinia.
