ÉGLISE YPAPANTI DE KALAMATA
Large metropolitan church completed in 1873. Houses the icon of the Virgin Ypapanti, discovered burnt on this site around 1770.
This large church with two steeples (Ιερός Ναός Υπαπαντής/Ieros Naos Ypapanti) is dedicated to Jesus' "Offering" to the Temple. Built from 1839 and completed in 1873, it is the seat of Messinia's metropolis (bishopric). It owes its name to a "miraculous" icon of the Virgin and Child: displayed on a proskinetarion (lectern), it was discovered blackened by flames around 1770, on this site, in a former church converted into a stable.
