KALAMATA CASTLE
Ruined castle built in the century under the reigns of the Frankish princes of Achaïe Geoffroi and Guillaume II de Villehardouin.
This ruined castle (Κάστρο Καλαμάτας/Kastro Kalamatas) occupies a cliff-lined hill that was once the acropolis of the ancient city of Pharis. A tower and part of the ramparts built in the 13th century during the reigns of the Frankish princes Geoffroi and Guillaume II de Villehardouin remain. Inside, the church of the Virgin Mary, known as Kalomata ("with beautiful eyes"), gives its name to the town and was rebuilt in the 19th century. Also: modern open-air theater (summer performances). Below, the large Ypapanti church, built in 1873.
