PLACE VASILEOS GEORGIOU
Kalamata's central square lined with cafés and restaurants. Two monuments to the war of independence.
Kalamata's central square (Πλατεία Βασιλέως Γεωργίου/Platia Vasileos Georgiou) is almost 400 m long. Created in 1905, it is lined with terraces of cafés and restaurants. It bears the name of King George II of Greece (reign 1935-1947). It features a fountain and two monuments commemorating the War of Independence (1821-1829): that of Freedom (1978) and that of Light (2021). The latter bears the Manifesto addressed to Europe, the first official text of modern Greece, issued by the "Senate of Messinia" on March 28, 1821.
