ANCIENT MESSENE ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM
Home to sculptures and steles from ancient Messene, including two copies of Polyclitus: theMessene Hermes and the Doryphorus.
This small museum (Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Αρχαίας Μεσσήνης/Archaiologiko Mousio Archaias Messinis) houses some 50 sculptures and steles from ancient Messene. Two marble statues stand out. These are faithful 1st century AD copies of bronzes by the great Polyclitus (5th century BC): theHermes of Messinis, a superb nude wearing a chlamydia carelessly over his shoulder, and the bust of Doryphorus, a "spear-carrier" of idealized proportions.
