KORONI CASTLE
A vast Venetian castle. Inside: a few inhabited houses, a monastery and the beautiful church of Agia Sofia.
This vast 6.2-hectare castle (Κάστρο Κορώνης/Kastro Koronis) occupies the tip of the Koroni peninsula. It was built by the Venetians from the 13th century onwards, on the site of ancient 7th-century Byzantine fortifications. Captured by the Ottomans in 1500, it was retaken by the Venetians until 1715. The Ottoman garrison surrendered to General Maison's French troops in 1828. Inside are a few inhabited houses, a monastery and the 12th-century church of Agia Sofia, built over an earlier5th-century church and temple of Apollo.
