Home to the heart of the creator of the modern Olympic Games in 1896. Remains of the temple of Demeter Chamyne nearby.
This marble column from 1938 (Μνημείο Πιέρ ντε Κουμπερτέν/Mnimio Pierre de Coubertin) houses the heart of French baron Pierre de Coubertin (1863-1937), who created the modern Olympic Games in 1896, drawing inspiration from the ancient games of Olympia. His body rests in Lausanne, the Swiss home of the International Olympic Committee, but in accordance with Coubertin's wishes, his heart was buried here. Nearby: remains of the temple of Demeter Chamyné (5th century BC).
