The country's biggest carnival runs from January to March (dates vary). It ends with parades and the burning of the "Carnival King".
This carnival (Καρναβάλι της Πάτρας/Festivali tis Patras or Πατρινό Καρναβάλι/Patrino Karnavali) is Greece's biggest, with around 800,000 participants and spectators. It culminates in a grand finale the weekend before Orthodox Pure Monday (moving date): parades of floats and costumed groups from Friday to Sunday, followed by the burning of the "Carnival King" on Sunday evening at the North Port. The first edition, in 1829, is said to have been born of the influence of French troops who came to support insurgents during the War of Independence.
