This neo-Byzantine basilica-cathedral (Ιερός Ναός Αγίου Ανδρέα/Ieros Naos Agiou Andrea) is the largest church in Greece: it can accommodate over 5,500 worshippers and its dome reaches 50 m in height, topped by a 5 m-high cross. Built from 1908 onwards, it was completed in 1974. According to local tradition, it houses the relics of St. Andrew, who was crucified in Patras under Emperor Nero around 60 A.D. It is the seat of the metropolis (Greek Orthodox bishopric) of Patras, which covers three demes around the city.
