RIO FORTRESS
Ottoman fortress built in 1499 to control the Rio Strait. Shaped like a triangle, it offers fine views over the bridge.
This Ottoman fortress (Φρούριο Ρίου/Frourio Riou) commanded the Rio Strait, nicknamed "the little Dardanelles". It was erected in 1499 on the ruins of a Roman fort, then damaged, captured and remodeled three times: in 1532 by the Spanish, in 1603 by the Knights of Malta and in 1687 by the Venetians. It was retaken each time by the Ottomans, except in 1828, when General Maison's French troops captured it. Today, it takes the form of a triangle, with fine views over the Rio-Antirio bridge.
