MEGA SPILEO MONASTERY
One of Greece's oldest monasteries, founded in the century. Beautiful setting, under cliffs, but ugly modern buildings.
The "Great Cave" monastery (Ιερά Μονή Μεγάλου Σπηλαίου/Iera Moni Megalou Spilaiou) enjoys a superb setting: it's set beneath 120m-high cliffs. Alas, the buildings resemble low-income housing blocks... This is because the complex was destroyed by the Germans in 1943. Yet it is one of the oldest monasteries in Greece, founded in the 4th century. There is a "miraculous" grotto and a museum, including an icon of the Virgin Mary attributed to Saint Luke, which, according to legend, was discovered in the grotto in 362.
