CHELMOS-VOURAÏKOS GEOPARK
Area of 647 included on the Unesco list of World Geoparks: Vouraïkos gorges, Mount Chelmos, Kastria cave..
Since 2009, this 647 km2 protected area (Γεωπάρκο Χελμού-Βουραϊκού/Geoparko Chelmou-Vouraïkou) has been included on Unesco's list of Global Geoparks. It encompasses the Chelmos-Vouraïkos National Park (544 km2) and boasts a rich geological heritage around Kalavryta. In the north, of course, are the superb Vouraïkos gorges. In the eastern part, the Chelmos massif boasts seven peaks over 2,000 m high, including Psili Koryfi at 2,355 m. According to Greek mythology, the Chelmos is the source of the Styx, the river of the Underworld. At an altitude of 2,100 m, on the eastern flank of the massif, a 200 m-high waterfall bears the name "Cascade du Styx". It feeds the Krathis, a small coastal river that flows into the Gulf of Corinth at Akrata. To the south-west of Chelmos lies the Kastria cave, a superb karst cavity with 13 underground lakes. The landscape is also marked by the Kalavryta forest, the small Tsivlos lake (8 ha), at 700 m altitude, which was formed by a landslide in 1913, and the artificial Doxa lake (50 ha), at 900 m altitude, created by a dam on the Doxa in 1998. Finally, the geopark is home to two major human facilities: the Kalavryta ski resort, whose highest slope starts on Psili Koryfi, and the Chelmos observatory, set up in 2007 on Neraidorachi peak (2,341 m), one of the areas of Europe least affected by light pollution.
