MONT PARNASSE
Beautiful mountain north of Arachova, linked to the myths of Apollo and the Muses. Caves, ski resort, hiking trails...
This mountain range (Παρνασσός/Parnassos) overlooks Arachova and Delphi to the north, straddling Phocis, Phthiotida and Boeotia. Known in mythology as the domain of Apollo and the Muses, it culminates at an altitude of 2,457 m and is home to the country's largest ski resort. An area of 37 km2 makes up Greece's oldest national park, created in 1938 at the same time as Olympus. This protected area includes the archaeological site of Delphi, the ski resort of Mount Parnassus, the climbing site of Kouvelos (13 km on foot north-east of Arachova), caves, waterfalls and three peaks at over 2,300 m altitude: Liakoura (highest point), Tsarkos (2,416 m) and Gerondovrachos (2,396 m). There are several villages, including Kalyvia (8.5 km north-west of Arachova) and Eptalofos (19 km north-west of Kalyvia). Despite bauxite mining, nature is well preserved, with many endemic plants and the presence of wolves and birds of prey. Several hiking trails are signposted, including the European E4 path linking Eptalofos to Delphi (10 km). And of all the Parnassus caves, the Corycian Cave, near Kalyvia, is the most famous. It owes its name to the muse Corycia and was once a sanctuary for the god Pan. The name Parnassus comes from Parnassos, a son of Poseidon. Last but not least, the Parisian district of Montparnasse was named after the Muses of the Massive Arts, since in the 18th century, poets came here to declaim their verses.
