Visit Thermopylae, the site of a feat engraved in Greek history.
It was near the present-day village of Thermopylae/Θερμοπύλες ("hot gates") that one of the most famous battles of antiquity took place: in 480 BC, the Spartan king Leonidas and 1,000 Greek hoplites sacrificed themselves to delay the Achaemenid army. Next to the memorial (1955), an information center broadcasts a 12-minute documentary. To the south, a 400 m path leads to the "Phocaean wall", where the Greeks are said to have fought their last stand.
