ZALONGO MONUMENT
White monumental sculpture perched on Mount Stefani.
It's a monumental white sculpture perched 700 metres up on Mount Stefani, above the monastery and village of Zalongo. It is both serious and mysterious, like the drama it is intended to recall. Created in 1961 by Giorgios Zongolopoulos (also responsible for Les Parapluies à Thessalonique), the work commemorates the "Dance of Zalongo", a collective suicide of 56 Souliot women who threw themselves and their children off the cliff in 1803 to avoid being enslaved by the troops of Ali Pacha of Ioannina.
